Justice Aisha Shujune Mohamed has been sworn in as the Supreme Court’s representative at the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih appointed the new justice to JSC on Sunday, and her oath of office was administered by Justice Dr. Azmiralda Zahira at a function held at the President’s Office in the morning.

The appointment was made as per Article 158 (b) of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives and Article 3 (2) of the Judicial Service Commission Act.

Shujune is one of the first women to be appointed to the Supreme Court bench; she was appointed with Dr. Azmiralda in September this year. While she has been appointed to JSC, Azmiralda was appointed as the court's interim chief following the retirement of Justice Abdulla Areef.

While the JSC comprises of 10 representatives from various fields; the parliament speaker, a judge of the Supreme Court other than the chief justice, a judge of the High Court, a judge of the lower courts, a member of the people’s majlis, a member of the general public appointed by the People’s Majlis, the president of the Civil Service Commission, a person appointed by the president, the attorney general and a lawyer elected among the lawyers licensed to practice in Maldives. There are currently seven members in the commission.
