Elections Commission of Maldives has announced that the upcoming 2020 local council elections will have voting booths specialised for the disabled.
The 2020 local council election is scheduled for April 4th.
While speaking on the topic of the upcoming election on RaajjeTV's "FalaSuruhee" programme on Saturday, Elections Commission's Vice-President Ahmed Akram stated that elections can most effectively concluded with the co-operation of the national advisory committee for elections.
While noting the contributions of the committee to the local council elections, Akram stated that the committee has also included organisations that advocate for the disabled since the last parliamentary elections.
Akram further stated that the upcoming local council elections will feature specialised voting booths for the disabled.
Likewise, election-related information and workshops will include a sign-language interpreter to make the elections more accessible to as many eligible voters as possible, revealed Akram.
He also stated that there will be major changes to the local council election following the recent ratification of the Decentralisation bill.
As such, the Election Commission states that the national advisory committee for elections plays the greatest role in forwarding the commission's decisions to the public.
