Maldives Correctional Service has revealed that Maldives' former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, convicted for money laundering, was taken to IGM hospital to conduct the mandatory initial health screening for detainees.

Speaking to a reporter of RaajjeMV, a media official from the Maldives Correctional Service revealed that former President Yameen was taken to IGM hospital on Friday morning to conduct the initial health screening for detainees mandated in the general regulations for all detainees entering incarceration.

Yameen was charged with laundering USD one million through the state-owned Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), via a private company SoF, during his presidency.

During Thursday afternoon's verdict hearing, the five-judge bench unanimously agreed that the former president is guilty of the charge of money-laundering.

The court sentenced him to five years in prison in addition to a fine of USD five million to be paid to Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) within six months of November 28th.

As such, public opinion on the case is divided with some citizens taking to social media to claim that justice has been served for once in the country's judiciary whereas members and supporters of the coalition between the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People’s National Congress (PNC) allege the verdict was politically influenced and that Yameen will never get justice as long as the current administration is in power.
