Mohamed Shifaz has been elected as the main ruling party’s Vice President, for a second term, while former President Mohamed Nasheed was elected president.

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) held its leadership elections on Friday, for party president and VP.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed was once again elected as party president. While he ran unopposed, 23,369 people voted for his election while 63 said no.

Shifaz -currently a minister at the President’s Office- ran against North Hithadhoo constituency MP Mohamed Aslam.

He won with 13,233 votes while Aslam received 9,957; 23,613 people took part in the vote.

MDP, the first and largest political party in the country, had said that 87,439 were eligible to take part in its internal election.
