Parliament's Committee on Independent Institutions has announced that interviews for the vacancies for the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom) will continue until 12th of November.
An official of the parliament's secretariat revealed to RaajjeMV that the committee has decided to conduct interviews on an additional day due to time constraints.
The committee had initially determined to conduct interviews of the 36 candidates on the 4th, 5th and 6th of November during the meeting held on October 14th, however, due to time constraints, the committee decided to hold interviews on the 12th of November as well.
The committee chose to hold the interviews next Tuesday due to the parliament being closed on Thursday and Sunday being declared a holiday in connection to Republic day on Monday.
The committee has been interviewing the 36 candidates according to the order presented by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to the parliament.
Two vacancies for the board of Broadcom was announced following the resignation of the former vice-president of Broadcom, Abdulla Sofwan and commission member, Hassan Nabah.
In addition to Sofwan and Nabah, the former president of the commission, Mohamed Shaheeb, also resigned following the committee's decision to remove him and Fathmath Zaina- who was appointed as VP after Sofwan's resignation. 56 MPs voted in favour of her dimissal.
At present, the commission is comprised of three members out of the required number of six members. They are Zeena Zahir, Aminath Saraahath Izzath and Amjad Waheed.
In addition to the interviews for members of Broadcom, the committee is also in the process of disbanding Maldives Media Council, and drafting a bill titled "Media Commission" to form a joint institution between Broadcom and MMC in order to monitor the media industry in the country.
