Transparency Maldives says that Maldives Broadcasting Commission has failed to create a positive environment for free media, given that they themselves were under severe political pressure and influence.

A statement released by the Commission on Monday, stated that Maldives was party to international agreements and conventions calling for media freedom and freedom of expression and noting these were enshrined in the Constitution as well.

Transparency said there was sufficient evidence that Broadcasting Commission had failed to conduct themselves in a fair and an independent manner. Noting that certain stations were being penalized by huge sums, Transparency said that there was a targeted attack on certain medias. The agency especially noted the penalties being levied on RaajjeTV.

“RaajjeTV has been on several occasions penalized and ordered to apologize for broadcasts of speeches on political platforms and the content on various programming of the station. As such, the channel was penalized by MVR 1 million on the day the channel had paid the previous fine of MVR 250,000,” the agency said.

Transparency noted that this was the heftiest fine imposed on a single channel under the 2016 Anti-Defamation and Freedom of Expression Bill. Adding that this imposed severe restrictions on media, Transparency said this contributed to deterioration of democratic values and establishing free and independent media.

The agency called on Broadcasting Commission to cease such acts and adhere to their governing principles and mandate. It also called on the Commission to establish themselves as a body free from political influence and foster public faith in the Commission.
