Maldives is to celebrate its National Day with a special ceremony on Monday.

The Ministry of Home Affairs told RaajjeMV that the ceremony will be held at Dharubaaruge.

The Maldives marks its National Day on the 1st of Rabi al-Awwal every year, celebrating the victory of Muhammad Thakurufaanu over the Portuguese occupation in 1573 AD.

Senior government officials will attend this ceremony, including President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Home Minister Imran Abdulla.

This year, the annual National Awards conferred to Maldivians who have made exemplary contributions in various fields will be awarded at the National Day celebrations.

Home ministry’s media director Hafsy Abdulla said that an additional ceremony will be held in Utheemu island in Haa Alifu atoll, on Tuesday night.

Environment Minister Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan will be the guest of honour at this ceremony.

Utheemu island is significant as Muhammad Thakurufaanu hails from the island. The island also has a memorial centre to Thakurufaanu.

Furthermore, Hafsy said that a flag hoisting ceremony will be held in all island across the country on Tuesday morning.

This will be incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's first National Day since assuming office last November; he was elected in September.
