Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed that the fire in Kulhudhuffushi island of Haa Dhaal atoll reported in the early hours of Tuesday was a deliberate attack.

The fire originated inside a local residence, Kakaage, and was reported at 04:16am following which fire fighters were dispatched immediately. Upon arrival at the site, officers revealed that a pickup parked nearby had caught fire as well, along with the roof of the house.

The house had however been severely damaged and a motorcycle in front of the house had also burned beyond use. The house next to the one that was torched was also affected.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

Following investigations, MPS revealed that the fire is deemed to be a deliberate attack by a person or a group, however, no arrests have been made thus far.

It was extinguished around 04:40am, and officers had worked to extract the dense smoke from inside the house.
