50 houses in southernmost Addu City have been heavily affected by floods caused by the recurrent rain caused by the monsoon season prevailing over the country in the past few days, says Addu City Mayor Abdulla Sodiq.
Mayor Sodiq revealed that some of the household property in a lot of residences have also been damaged due to flood water entering homes.
While a yellow alert was issued across the region on Saturday morning, a second yellow alert was issued over the region by the time afternoon rolled around due to persistent heavy rain showers.
As such, yellow alerts were issued from 8am to 12pm and again from 12pm to 4pm.
Speaking to RaajjeMV, Chief Executive at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Hisaan Hassan revealed that they received reports of the damages incurred on houses due to flooding and that they are working to extend assistance with the joint efforts from the city council and Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF).
They are also working to compile a damage assessment report of the affected residences.
MNDF officers are currently working to drain flood water from the region.
