Government has on Sunday submitted the Pesticides Bill for parliament approval.

It is among the 201 motions that the government plans to send to parliament, throughout President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s tenure.

Noting that the government “understands that proper regulation of potentially threatening agents such as pesticides is imperative to protect the citizens and the ecology of islands,” the President’s Office emphasized that this pesticides bill “encompasses a wide range of elements including setting standards for the import, use, production, export and proper disposal of pesticides.”

“The bill also includes best practices for the usage of pesticides correlating with health, wellness environment, and ecological conservation,”
President's Office

The bill also allocates “a Pesticide Unit within the pertinent ministry, as government entity with a mandate to assist and protect the public from adverse effects of misuse of pesticides”. This unit will include a research division with official laboratories to monitor, evaluate and collect data and statistics “to help make the safest decisions for the community.”

Once passed and ratified, those that fail to comply with the law will face fines ranging between MVR 5,000 and MVR 10,000.
