A prisoner has been caught attempting to escape from Asseyri Prison in K Himmafushi.
The police service stated that the Himmafushi police station received the report of the prisoner’s attempted escape on Monday at 10pm.
The prisoner was caught a few minutes later due to the search efforts of the police and correctional service and was taken to Maafushi Prison.
In a similar incident, a prisoner had recently attempted to escape from Maafushi Prison.
Maldivian prisons have been criticized for the lack of security and outdated facilities, and for authorities being biased in providing parole and clemency.
The current government has pledged to reform the prison system and help released convicts become productive members of society.
The Correctional Service is in charge of the four prisons in Maldives, which are Maafushi Prison, Himmafushi Asseyri Prison, Hulhumale’ Detention Centre, and Male’ Prison.
