A protest was held in Maamigilli island of Alif Dhaal Atoll on Saturday evening, calling for the release of all political detainees.

Residents from Maamigilli and Fenfushi took part in the protest, and called for the release of former President Mohamed Nasheed, former Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim, Adhaalath Party Leader Sheikh Imran Abdulla, MP Ahmed Mahloof and the parliament representative for Maamigilli constituency Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim.

A reporter from RaajjeTV, who was in Maamigilli to cover the protest, said that a number of people took part in the protest, and called for the immediate release of all political prisoners.

Maamiglli MP Qasim Ibrahim was arrested on Thursday night, following which Maamigilli residents took to the streets in protest of the arrest.

Abdulla Mufeed, a member of the island’s council said Qasim Ibrahim’s arrest is unjust and called on the authorities to release him. He told RaajjeMV that the lawmaker’s supporters had gathered outside the police station calling for his immediate release.
