Maldives’ second “document examination lab” has been established at Gan International Airport in southernmost Addu City.

The lab was inaugurated by Mayor Abdulla Sadiq on Sunday, at a special ceremony held at the airport.

A number of officials from Maldives Immigration attended the ceremony, including Controller General Mohamed Ahmed Hussain, as well as officials from other law enforcement agencies based in Addu City.

The new documentation lab comprises of equipment to verify the authenticity of the security and identity of documents, detect fraudulent travel documents and imposters at the border.

Maldives Immigration said that the implementation of the lab at the Gan International Airport “will enhance the passenger screening mechanism, and will assist to identify the illegitimate travelers.”

The country’s first documentation lab was established at the main Velana International Airport (VIA) in 2015.

While this lab uses “the document verifier” as a primary equipment, it was a grant aid from the International Organization for Migration.
