Swell waves have begun flooding Thinadhoo on Friday.
Speaking to RaajjeMV, Thinadhoo Council President Ibrahim Assad said that the island began being affected by swell waves at 1:30pm.
Assad said that Thinadhoo experienced waves rising to 200 feet, which has also affected the island’s telecommunications office building.
He said that they have never seen such strong swell waves in years and that it has flooded the area between the jetty and the island hospital.
Assad said that Thinadhoo, with a population of 12,000 residents, harbors many vessels and that crewmen are working to prevent damage to their boats due to the waves.
He also said that the cause of the swells is due to the lack of an outer coastal barrier, which they are in the process of developing with the help of the planning ministry.
