Maldives Police Service (MPS) has confirmed former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb’s arrest while attempting to flee, adding that the work is being to return him to the country.
In a statement released shortly after news broke of Adeeb’s arrest from India, police said that he was arrested while attempting to leave the country via sea.
It added that Adeeb’s passport has been confiscated under a Supreme Court order, and that he had failed to present himself for an interrogation regarding the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations (MMPRC) embezzlement case.
Police said that they are working together with the neighboring nations, to ensure his return to Maldives.
The service also emphasized that it will be investigating and taking action against those that helped him to flee.
