Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) would be more efficient if it is run as its own company, says CEO Ibrahim Saleem.

CEO Saleem said this on Tuesday after being presented to the the parliament’s economic affairs committee.

Responding to a question from Velidhoo MP Mohamed Abdulla Shafeeq, CEO Saleem said that, even if IGMH is under the Civil Service, the hospital would run more efficiently if it has its own policies similar to Immigration and Customs.

Highlighting the various difficulties IGMH faces, Saleem said that they do not have the budget for training programmes and that there is also the problem of employees resigning after studying on the government’s expense.

He also said that there are issues with following the hiring process, resulting in delays in hiring new employees.

There are currently more than 1,600 people in the IGMH workforce with 675 nurses, 129 specialist doctors, 121 medical officers, and a 300-bed capacity.
