Muhthaz Muhsin was appointed the first Prosecutor General (PG) of former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration due to the request of suspended Justice Abdulla Didi.
Muhsin was appointed PG on July 22, 2014, after months of the position remaining vacant, despite the regulations dictating that a new PG be appointed within 30 days.
RaajjeMV understands that Justice Didi had told then Tourism Minister Ahmed Adeeb that Muhthaz would be good for the position.
Adeeb, who would later become Yameen’s Vice President before being jailed, has been accused of using his position to fulfill the wishes of the government and ruling party. He had also used his influence to get the parliament, with the government majority, to vote in Muhsin to the position of PG.
The police forensic report publicized by Judicial Service Commission (JSC) shows that Justice Didi requested Adeeb to appoint family members to government positions.
It also shows that Justice Didi had sent a text message to Adeeb in 2014, suggesting Muhsin for the position of PG.
Muhsin was the PG when former President Mohamed Nasheed was charged with terrorism, while Didi was the Chief Judge of the Criminal Court who presided over his case. Didi is accused of accepting MVR 1 million to issue the 13-year prison sentence against Nasheed in March 2015.
Muhsin was dismissed as PG for allegedly violating the constitution, and was sentenced to 17 years in prison in 2016 after being found guilty of forging documents to arrest Yameen.
Muhsin’s sentence was overturned and was released during the current government.
