Elections Commisison (EC) Ahmed Shareef has openly mocked former President Abdulla Yameen over his refusal to accept last year’s presidential election results.
In a recent press interview, Yameen said that it was hard for him to accept his loss at the elections.
Yameen said that he filed the Supreme Court case after the elections, after finding out that the complaints bureau was moved the day before the elections. Yameen said that the bureau had no fax line or e-mail after the move, resulting in voters being unable to file complaints on election day. Yameen also said that he found out about this issue after the elections.
Regarding the interview, EC Shareef tweeted that Yameen should write down his claims and send it to a short story competition. Responding to the tweet, EC spokesperson Ahmed Akram said it was disappointing to see people defame EC for political gain.
After the elections, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) had also claimed that the election results were falsified.
In the Supreme Court case, Yameen claimed that rings, pens, and chemicals were used to change the markings on ballot papers.
During the election year, EC stated that their employees were threatened to influence the election results.
Yameen lost his bid for re-election after receiving 96,052 votes, and incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih won with 134,705.
