India’s Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has arrested two Maldivians in Chennai, attempting to smuggle drugs into the Maldives via a Sri Lankan Airlines flight.

Arrested were a 22-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman who were to head on their way to the Maldives after having stayed in India for over 20 days, reported Times of India. They were inspected after they reached Chennai International Airport on Sunday for check-in.

Authorities cracked down on the drug smuggling case after being tipped off that the Maldivians were heading back after collecting the hashish from an individual in Chennai.

Officers of the Chennai Zonal Unit of NCB found hashish-filled foil packs stuffed inside unsealed shampoo bottles inside their luggage.

The drugs seized weigh over one kilogram and is expected to be worth USD 72,950.

While Indian authorities have launched investigations to trace the dealer, news outlets report that the two had been in Trivandrum for a while and moved to Chennai, last week.
