While a foreign worker died after a construction accident on Wednesday, police said that he was crushed under a jumbo bag.

Police had first stated that he was hit by a falling cement bag.

Noting that this was "a mistake”, the police media officer told RaajjeMV that he was hit in the head by a jumbo bag filled with cement bags.

A 24-year-old Bangladeshi worker was killed in the accident on Wednesday.

Police said that he was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

The accident occurred at a building being constructed by Jaah Investment Private Limited, near Central Park in Hulhumalé. There was another incident in the same building earlier this week.

Safety at construction sites in the heavily congested capital city has been heavily scrutinized; a seven-year-old girl was killed in a similar accident last December while another Bangladeshi worker was killed in February.

The seven-year-old’s death prompted an immediate inspection of all construction sites. Ordered by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the inspection was conducted by the planning ministry.
