Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) has no set date to apply for registration, says Cultural Minister Yumna Maumoon.
Minister Yumna had in May, requested the Elections Commission (EC) to form the party for a second time.
Higher Education Minister Ibrahim Hassan had first requested approval to form MRM on February 19 and then withdrew the request near the deadline.
Afterwards, Minister Yumna requested approval to form MRM on May 27. She told RaajjeMV that they are working to increase membership and that the senior members will discuss the date to apply for registration.
3,000 membership applications need to be submitted with the party registration application within three months after the EC gives approval to form the party.
Once registered, MRM would become the third party that former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has formed. Maumoon formed his first part, Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), in 2008 and left after disagreements with party leader Ahmed Thasmeen.
He formed Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) in 2011 but left after a dispute within the party leadership led to the Supreme Court handing over leadership to then President Abdulla Yameen, Maumoon’s half-brother.
