Former President Abdulla Yameen has said that the courts should issue orders against the current government, just as the Supreme Court had done on February 1, 2018, during his administration.
Yameen said this at the anti-government rally held by Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) at the carnival area on Thursday night.
Speaking at the rally, Yameen, who has been accused of influencing the courts during his administration, said that the country’s institutions began deteriorating after the February 1 order, which he also claimed cost him his re-election.
Yameen also said that his government had provided jobs to more than 100,000 young people during his five years, while also claiming that the current government has failed to provide job opportunities, except to a favored few.
Providing 94,000 jobs was a key pledge of Yameen’s administration, and during his five years, Yameen and cabinet ministers at various times provided different numbers for the amount of jobs created.
However, Yameen’s government had also fired employees for supporting and joining opposition events, and meeting with opposition leaders. Police and military officers were also dismissed after February 1.
