The National Sports Council has been abolished.

Sports Minister Ahmed Mahloof announced this via Twitter on Sunday, noting that the council was abolished in order to form one as per the Sports Act 30/2015.

He said that a new council will be formed, with elected members.

The minister also thanked the members of the outgoing council.

Former President Abdulla Yameen formed the National Sports Council in 2015.

The council comprises of 11 members. They are four members appointed by the sports minister, including two women, as well as representatives from the education ministry and sports associations. The minister is to appoint a lawyer to the council as well.

The National Sports Council manages matters related to the sports associations in the country as well as promote Maldivian athletes and the field overall.

While the council has been abolished, a new member was appointed in December 2018 by the current administration.
