Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has said that there is no danger in Sri Lanka and that everyone should visit the country.
The former President said this after arriving in Sri Lanka on Friday on his official trip.
Speaking to the media at Bandaranaike International Airport, Nasheed said the purpose of his trip is assure Sri Lankans that Maldivians support them.
Noting that Sri Lanka has helped his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and other Maldivian political parties, Nasheed said that he and other politicians had been able to receive asylum in Sri Lanka during former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration.
Nasheed said Sri Lanka is always willing to help Maldives establish peace and develop its democracy and that MDP, the main ruling party, will always stand by Sri Lanka during times of tragedy. He also praised Sri Lanka for its emergency response and security measures taken after the terror attacks on April 21.
During Nasheed’s three-day visit, he is being accompanied by deputy speaker Eva Abdulla, cabinet ministers, members of MDP’s parliamentary group and other MPs.
Nasheed will be holding a press conference with the ministers at Cinnamon Grand Hotel on Saturday and the Sri Lankan Prime Minister will host a banquet in his honor later in the evening.
He is scheduled to meet Sri Lanka’s parliament speaker on Sunday.
