Technical error behind delay in giving funds to PPM: EC
EC has requested the ministry to provide PPM the funds after they fixed the error on Sunday
Finance Ministry’s media executive Mohamed Shanoon said PPM’s funds will be provided next week

Elections Commission (EC) has stated that a technical error caused a delay in giving funds to opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

EC spokesperson Ahmed Akram said it requested the finance ministry to provide the funds to the four eligible political parties on May 23 but that the technical error has resulted in PPM not receiving their money.

Akram said EC has requested the ministry to provide PPM the funds after they fixed the error on Sunday.

Finance Ministry’s media executive Mohamed Shanoon said PPM’s funds will be provided next week.

The funds are distributed to parties that had 10,000 members last November.

MVR 26.2 million from the state budget was allocated for political parties and PPM has not yet received its MVR 9 million.

The other three major parties have received their funds, with Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) receiving over MVR 12 million, and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and Jumhooree Party (JP) receiving over MVR 2 million each.

Since December, only MDP and PPM have at least 10,000 members. MDP’s membership is over 50,000 while PPM's membership fell to 38,000.
