The police stated that he has been receiving protection since July 31, 2016, after investigations into a threat.

The police stated that it has been renewing Umar’s protection and that the last renewal was in May.

Umar began receiving police protection a month after he resigned as Home Minister.

He had also requested protection earlier as Home Minister, via a letter to then Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim.
