The Ministry of Home Affairs has formed the Prisons Reform Committee to monitor the implementation of the prison audit report.

The 290-page report was publicized on May 28 by the Prisons Audit Commission established by the President.

The report contains detailed information on prison conditions and exposes the problems in the system such as overcrowding, neglect of the rights of prisoners, and sub-par facilities.

The home ministry stated that the newly formed committee will monitor and help implement the proposals for prison reform highlighted in the audit report.

The committee consists of Home Minister Imran Abdulla as Chair, Ali Nazeer from the home ministry, Inspector of Correctional Service Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu, Superintendent of Prisons Mohamed Asif, and Chief Inspector of Police Imthiyaz Zahir.

Conducting an audit of Maldivian prisons is part of the 100-day pledges of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
