Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has criticized the Commission for Prisons’ recently publicized audit report for neglecting to include information provided by the commission.
In a press release on Wednesday, HRCM stated that the report does not include any information HRCM had provided in relation to its responsibilities and its cases on torture and unlawful imprisonment.
HRCM also highlighted that the proposals made in the report were the same ones HRCM had repeatedly made to state authorities.
The Ministry of Home Affairspublicized the prisons audit report on Tuesday. The report contains detailed information on prison conditions and highlights the current issues in the system such as overcrowding, neglecting the rights of prisoners, and sub-par facilities.
The report also statedthat institutions such as HRCM failed to carry out its responsibilities after the state refused to obey the February 1, 2018, Supreme Court order to release nine prisoners. The report states that HRCM had also failed to help officers who were detained during the state of emergency that was declared five days after the court order.
