An audit report on Maldivian prisons was publicized on Tuesday and is available at the Ministry of Home Affairs website.

The report contains detailed information on prison conditions and exposes the problems in the system such as overcrowding, neglecting the rights of prisoners, and sub-par facilities.

It also highlights the large number of youths jailed over drug-related crimes, convicts serving 25-year sentences despite changes to the drug laws, and keeping citizens and expatriates in indefinite remand.

The report noted that the prisons in Male’ and Maafushi facilitate more than the required number of prisoners.

In the report, most of the proposals for change are for the correctional service, which is 64%. 26% of the proposals are for the police service, 5% are for the Ministry of Home Affairs, and 3% are for the inspector of correctional service.

The report also includes various cases of corruption, torture, and matters of public concern.
