PM Modi to visit Maldives next month, fresh off his re-election victory

President's Office did not deny the visit

Modi is expected to visit the Maldives from 7-8 June

Authorities are yet to confirm the visit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to travel to Maldives next month, according to reports.

While authorities are yet to officially announce the visit, reports state that Maldives will be one of the stops in the prime minister’s tour of the region, following his landslide re-election victory earlier this week.

Modi is expected to visit the Maldives from 7-8 June.

When reached for a comment, spokesperson at the President's Office Ibrahim Hood did not deny the visit but said that the dates "are yet to be finalized."

PM Modi was in the Maldives in November, to attend President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s inauguration ceremony; this was his first visit to the country since assuming office in 2014.

Bilateral relations between Maldives and India had soured during former President Abdulla Yameen's five-year tenure, but things have vastly improved since the new administration took over.

President Solih’s maiden state visit was to the neighboring country as well.
