Members of the Maldives Media Council (MMC) met with officials from the Prosecutor General (PG) Office on Monday, seeking to amend a regulation that allows the council to seek the prosecution of journalists.

Speaking to RaajjeMV regarding the meeting, MMC president Hidhaayathullah said that the discussion focused on Article 28 of the Media Council Regulations.

As per the article, the media regulator can seek the prosecution of journalists and media organizations if they fail to obey its orders or act disrespectfully.

However, Hidhaayathullah stressed that he does not wish to seek criminal charges against a journalist.

There are currently 108 registered online news sites in the Maldives, while 37 organizations have a broadcast license. They are regulated by MMC, and the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (MBC).
