Non-resident Ambassador of Portugal to the Maldives, Joao do Carmo Ataide da Camara presented his Letter of Credence to President Abdulla Yameen on Sunday.

A ceremony was held at the President’s Office on Sunday morning, where the President congratulated the Ambassador on the commencement of his term.

The President’s Office informed that the President had highlighted the importance ‘Maldives attaches to the relations between the two countries’.

At the call, noting that foreign investments ‘are imperative for economic growth, private sector development and greater wealth creation’, President Yameen said that he hoped that the Portuguese private sector ‘would seek investment opportunities in the Maldives, especially in the tourism industry’.

Speaking at the call, Ambassador Joao emphasized on enhancing relations between both countries, adding that both countries ‘share common views internationally’ and that that different areas of cooperation would be explored ‘in the years to come’.

The President was accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim and Minister of State for Foreign Relations at the President’s Office, Mohamed Naseer.

Ambassador Joao calls on Foreign Minister Asim

The Ambassador also called on Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Asim, on Sunday morning.

Congratulating him on the appointment, Minister Asim expressed confidence that Ambassador Joao would ‘further reinforce the bilateral ties and cooperation’ between both countries.

The Minister and Ambassador further exchanged ideas on enhancing cooperation between Maldives and Portugal, and 'reflected on ways for strengthening the existing ties especially in the areas of tourism, sport, trade and environment', informed the Foreign Ministry.

Ambassador Joao assured his commitment to work with the Maldivian government ‘in strengthening relations’ and to ‘extend cooperation for the development of Maldives’.

Minister Asim was accompanied by secretary bilateral at the Minstry Ahmed Khaleel, and assistant directors Shiuneen Rasheed and Moomina Ibrahim.
