The Commission is to release political party funds the next day

The Elections Commission (EC) is to make two announcements later this week.
As such, EC will release the political parties’ register on Wednesday while funds are to be released to the parties the next day.
EC said that a number of people had registered to political parties ahead of the 2019 parliamentary election.
Spokesperson Ahmed Akram said that they are currently in the process of verifying these forms, adding that the work will be completed by Wednesday.
Noting that it had received 40,000 application forms from November 2018 to May 2019, Akram said that 35,000 are those interested in joining the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
EC had last publicized the parties’ register in November 2018.
As per the Political Parties’ Act, the Commission must review the register “every six months.”
While EC has decided to provide funds to all political parties that sent in audit reports, and with over 10,000 members, it is to do so on Thursday.
The government has allocated a total of MVR 25.6 million out of the MVR 29.6 billion state fund as the budget of political parties for 2019.
