PNC members free to pick any speaker, deputy

While PNC was registered earlier this year, three of its candidates were elected to parliament last month

People’s National Congress (PNC) has yet to decide on whom to vote for speaker and deputy speaker, for the 19th parliament.

While PNC was registered earlier this year, three of its candidates were elected to parliament last month.

Its parliamentary group leader, former defence minister Adam Shareef told RaajjeMV that its members “have the choice” to vote for whomever they see fit.

He noted that a parliament speaker must “know” Maldives, and its people.

Shareef also noted that it should be someone that will act in accordance with the parliament regulations.

When asked if he had favorite among those that have expressed interest for parliament’s highest post, the MP-elect for Maduvvari constituency said that “there are some that are qualified.” However, he did not give out any names.

Further noting that PNC “will work differently in parliament,” the former defence minister said that they will act civil despite being an opposition party.

PNC and former ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) formed the ‘Progressive Congress’ coalition ahead of April’s parliamentary elections; the coalition will have a total of eight representatives in the 19th parliament. PNC was formed by former members of PPM, and is also led by former President Abdulla Yameen.
