19th parliament will investigate corruption allegations against previous administration: Ahmed Abdulla

He said that the allegations "cannot be ignored"

The 19th parliament will investigate the allegations of corruption against high ranking officials of former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration, says MP-elect Ahmed Abdulla.

The main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) representative, who was elected to the Baarah constituency in April’s parliamentary election, spoke to RaajjeTV on Monday night, and emphasized that these allegations “cannot be ignored.”

He added that the 19th parliament, who is to take the oath of office later in May, will assess the matter “seriously.”

Noting that there are questions on how these officials acquired the funds to build 10-storey houses, Abdulla said that “this must be investigated.”

He added that if it was done using state funds, “the state must claim them.”

Further noting that some of those elected to the 19th parliament are accused being involved in the corruption, Abdulla said that he believes that they “must be investigated as well.”

While former President Yameen had faced various corruption allegations throughout his tenure, for which he has since been investigated and charged, he had in 2016 “swapped” his private residence for a larger plot of land in the capital.
