A water plant has been established at Maafushi Prison to provide clean drinking water to convicts.

Home Minister Imran Abdulla inaugurated the water plant on Sunday.

Speaking at the event, the Minister said that the new plant is a cost-effective way to provide clean water to the prison.

Prison Cooperative Society (PRISCO) has been tasked with producing a ton of clean water per MVR 120 and will receive 30 percent of the profits from the project to provide clean drinking water to prisons. Previously, a ton of clean water cost MVR 420.

The new government has pledged to reform the Maldives prison system. The previous administration’s negligence of the poor conditions of prisons had led to the death of convicts.
