Voting closes, ex-President Yameen fails to cast vote
While Yameen is from North-Mahchangoalhi constituency, his PPM is fielding a candidate in the constituency

Former President Abdulla Yameen did not vote in Saturday’s parliamentary elections, RaajjeMV has confirmed.

While Yameen is from North-Mahchangoalhi constituency, his Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) is fielding a candidate in the constituency.

While Jameela Ali Khalid is running for North-Mahchangoalhi constituency, the former’s president half-nephew, current Dhiggaru constituency MP Faris Maumoon, is contesting independently; however, he is backed by his father former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, one of the ruling coalition leaders. Others running are ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Mohamed Rasheed and other independent candidates, Adam Manik, Mohamed Zameel and Aminath Shiruna.

While voting was to be held from 8am to 4pm on Saturday, the time was extended by two hours.

However, former President Yameen had not cast his ballot when voting closed.

264,442 people are eligible to vote in this year’s parliamentary elections, and according to Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM)’s latest results, the voter turnout reached over 75%.
