Special Olympics Committee to increase opportunities for children with disabilities
The team plans to continue taking part in upcoming international competitions

Special Olympics Committee is putting in numerous efforts to facilitate children with disabilities with more opportunities, says Maldivian athletes.

The statement was made during a meeting held at the President’s Office where the Maldives team that participated in the Special Olympics – World Games 2019 met with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih after concluding their trip.

During the meeting, President Solih congratulated the Maldives athletes and officials for their “remarkable” achievements in the competition, on behalf of the government and people of Maldives.

Conveying his appreciation and gratitude for the team’s unwavering determination and hard work, President Solih had inquired on the challenges the athletes currently face.

He further asked them about their experiences during the competition.

President Solih further exchanged ideas on solving issues the athletes face in their work.

The competition, held from the 14th to 21st of March in Abu Dhabi, was a multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities.

The Maldivian team comprised of two female and two male athletes.

Shifna Ibrahim secured the gold medal in the Women’s 100-meter dash in the New Nations Category while Wasmee Waheed secured the silver medal in the men’s 200-meter run.

The team plans to continue taking part in upcoming international competitions, they further revealed.

Upon their return, Acting Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment and a team from the Ministry had welcomed them at the Velana International Airport.
