The recently formed ‘Progressive Coalition’ says their leader, jailed former president Abdulla Yameen, needs to have medical tests carried out abroad.

The coalition, between former ruling Progressive Party of Maldives and the People’s National Congress, said this at a conference on Monday.

Panelists at the conference said that they have been informed, by Yameen’s family, that doctors have asked for tests to be carried out that are unavailable in the Maldives.

Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla accused the government of inhumane treatment by denying Yameen leave to fly out of the country for treatment.

Mohamed Saeed, a minister at Yameen’s cabinet, told the conference on Monday that the former president’s medical condition has worsened since being detained.

Saeed said that despite being asked to have tests carried out abroad, Yameen only requests that he be transferred to house arrest.

Yameen has been remanded over money laundering charges In February, and has been taken to hospital for cardiac treatment thrice, and is currently admitted there.
