Government will shut down without MDP majority: Nasheed

The government might shut down if Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) does not receive majority in the next parliament, says party leader and former president Mohamed Nasheed.
Speaking at the main ruling party’s campaign event in Addu City on Friday, Nasheed said that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s work will be greatly hindered if MDP does not have parliament majority.
He said that previous experience has shown that this would result in the dismissal of ministers, the loss of project funding, the crippling of government functions, and the government’s loss of the trust of state institutions such as the courthouse, which would ultimately lead to unrest and a coup.
Nasheed said his government was toppled by a coup in 2012 because his party lacked parliament majority.
However, he said that he has no doubt that the current government will fulfill its pledges and vowed that its plans for Addu City will be implemented and completed within two years if MDP receives majority.
The government has allocated MVR 5.6 billion for Addu City’s development, which includes the development of the Addu harbor, improving public services, and making Addu a sustainable city.
