The residents of Alif Dhaal atoll are eagerly waiting to see President Abdulla Yameen leave office, said opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s deputy chair, Ali Niyaz.

After having visited islands in the atoll, as part of MDP’s campaign for the upcoming local elections, Niyaz told RaajjeMV that residents had expressed concern over many of President Abdulla Yameen’s actions, and desperately want change.

Niyaz said residents had mostly been concerned over tax hikes and the government lowering subsidies on food and electricity. He said they had described themselves to be completely ‘choked’ financially.

“The people of this atoll are counting the days until Yameen is out of office, I’m confident that they will take a stand against his tyranny in the elections” Niyaz said “Fees levied on boats and sea travel have put many of the island’s humble fishermen out of work.

MDP members had gone door-to-door in Mahibadhoo, Kunburadhoo, Dhigurah, and Maamigilli.

Maamigilli MP Qasim Ibrahim is Jumhooree Party’s (JP) leader, now part of Maldives United Opposition (MUO).

The local council elections are scheduled for April 15th.
