Former President Mohamed Nasheed has met with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a tweet on Friday, Nasheed said that it was a pleasure to meet the Indian PM.

He also said that a strong, stable, and prosperous Maldives is not just in the interests of the Maldivian people, but the whole Indian ocean region.

Earlier on Thursday, Nasheed met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

During the meeting in New Delhi, they discussed areas of mutual concern such as climate change and extremism.

In a tweet, Nasheed said they also discussed Maldives falling into a ‘debt trap’ because of the ‘reckless borrowing’ of previous administration.

Former President Abdulla Yameen had accepted excessive loans from China to fund development projects.

Nasheed travelled to India on the invitation of the country’s Council for Chancellor Relations and the Jawaharlal Nehru University.
