Government coalition member Adhaalath Party has called on its fellow partners to ‘put the interests of the nation’ first.
The party said in a tweet on Saturday that it supports the coalition government acquiring a majority in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Adhaalath Party’s tweet translates to, ‘maintaining the coalition government, of which we are part, and ensuring that the government acquires a majority in parliament is one of our biggest goals. To put the interests of the nation and our people first, will always be our priority’.
These sentiments follow similar comments from coalition partner, former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. Gayoom advised against any inter-party conflict.
A potential rift between the remaining two coalition partners, the Jumhooree Party (JP) and the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has been reported.
While MDP leader Mohamed Nasheed has been calling on supporters of his party to ensure that they acquire a majority in parliament, JP leader Qasim has described this as ‘casting’ them aside.
Qasim, who publicly criticised Nasheed for saying as such, on Friday night said that the JP is willing to work with other parties in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
