The damage caused to houses in islands of Gaafu Dhaal atoll due to recent heavy rain is now being assessed, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has said.

NDMA project manager Hisaan Hussain said that severe damages were reported from Vaadhoo and Thinadhoo islands and that the authority is working with the islands’ local government councils.

The NDMA is contacting residents of houses that reported damage; Hisaan said that once the damage has been assessed, a report will be filed to acquire relief aid for the islands.

Heavy rain in the atoll on Friday had flooded the main roads of Thinadhoo island and was managed by setting up two drainage pumps. In Vaadhoo island, the rain had flooded homes and damaged property, residents reported.
