Supreme Court has formed the Judicial Council to dictate judicial policies.
According to the declaration, signed by Chief Justice Dr. Abdulla Didi, the purpose of the council is to act as a forum for judges to discuss policies to improve the justice system.
The Judicial Council will mainly comprise of the chief justice, Supreme Court justices, High Court judges, senior judges of the Male’ superior courts, and two senior magistrates appointed by the Supreme Court.
The chief justice will be presiding over the council meetings, which are to be held every three months. Extraordinary meetings are also allowed under some circumstances.
A judicial council was formed after the Judicature Act was enacted in 2010. However, back then the Supreme Court removed the articles mentioning the council and dissolved the council itself.
