President Ibrahim Mohamed has extended the deadline for complaint submission for those criminally charged for political gain, since 1st February 2012.
The President’s Office opened the opportunity to submit complaints on December 6, for a period of 30 days. However, the deadline has now been extended until 2pm on January 22.
The office said that the reason for extending the deadline is due to ‘numerous requests by the public.’
Releasing those ‘detained, criminally charged or sentenced to gain political motives’ is a major electoral pledge of incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
While a number of high-profile prisoners had been released after September’s presidential elections, prior to President Solih assuming office, he established the “Committee on Releasing Political Detainees” on the first day of his presidential term.
