Peoples National Congress (PNC) has acquired 3,000 signatures required to register the party with the Elections Commission, Fonadhoo constituency MP Abdul Raheem has said.

MP Raheem requested for permission to form a party under this name on Monday but was given permission to do so on Thursday.

His initial request was rejected due to him still having been a member of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), currently led by former president Abdulla Yameen.

Though the PPM’s leadership is in dispute and the PNC has been reported to be Yameen’s offshoot party in case the Supreme Court rules against him.

Raheem has been given three months to garner 3,000 members and once they register the party, will be allowed to hold the inaugural assembly.
