The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has expressed concern over the decision to close the German Consulate in the Maldives.
In a press statement expressing its concern, the MDP highlighted that for over sixty years, Germany has remained one of the Maldives' most vital development partners, both through bilateral relations and its influential role within the European Union. The party further noted that German assistance has been instrumental in achieving progress across various sectors, particularly in the Maldives' efforts to adapt to climate change and transition toward renewable energy.
The MDP has highlighted Germany's multifaceted support in the Maldives' transition to democracy, describing the nation as a long-standing and close ally in the ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic institutions. The party further acknowledged Germany's consistent assistance and cooperation in promoting democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, reaffirming that the close relationship between the MDP and Germany remains steadfast.
Furthermore, the statement highlighted that Germany remains one of the Maldives' most significant tourism markets. It noted that the high volume of German tourists visiting the country do so with the assurance of readily available consular assistance. However, the MDP pointed out that in a market where maintaining visitor confidence is paramount, the closure of the consulate has now undermined that certainty.
The statement highlighted that the German Consulate serves as a vital bridge in strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations, while expressing the MDP’s concern that the government failed to take adequate measures to prevent its closure. The party further asserted that this development is evidence of the government’s diminishing regard for ties with the Maldives' long-standing partners, and called for immediate efforts to restore consular services in Male'.
The statement reaffirmed the party's unwavering commitment to maintaining the close ties of friendship and partnership between the Maldives and Germany.
The German government announced the closure of its consulate on Friday, August 2. The German Embassy in Sri Lanka, which communicated the decision, advised that the embassy should be contacted directly for any emergency matters.
