Nadhuvee's most prominent work launched fact-based discussion on Maldives' conversion to Islam

Mohamed Waheed Nadhuvee, respected historian and literary scholar, has passed away on Friday morning.

RaajjeMV understands that Nadhuvee was in treatment at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where had been admitted since earlier this month.

The most prominent of his works is his account of Maldives’ nation-wide transition to Islam from Buddhism in the 12th century. This seminal work had initiated fact-based discussion on Muslim scholar Abu Barakat al Barbari, who is credited with having built the Hukuru Miskiy and converting Maldives to Islam.

Nadhuvee has also had various works published in local history journals and collections of Dhivehi poetry, called ‘Lhen Bai’.

As an academic, Nadhuvee taught widely and had drafted the first syllabus for a degree program on the Dhivehi language.

The Academy of the Dhivehi Language, known locally as the Dhivehi Bahuge Academy, has said Nadhuvee’s death is a tragic loss to the vocation and the preservation of the Dhivehi language.
