The Elections Commission (EC) has discussed increasing the involvement of the police service in printing the ballot papers for the parliament election.
The EC members held the discussion at the police headquarters with acting commissioner Mohamed Hameed on Thursday.
EC member Ahmed Akram told RaajjeMV that police officers are usually active at the establishments tasked with printing the ballot papers but that they now want to give more responsibilities to the police.
During the meeting, they discussed strengthening cooperation between the police service and the EC, and allowing police officers to transport ballot boxes and coordinating security matters.
Opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) had requested the Supreme Court to nullify the last presidential election’s result after alleging that security was lax at the place where the ballot papers were stored.
At the hearings, the EC had presented the log book for those who entered the ballot paper’s storage area and explained that the police were active and that a camera was installed at the premises.
The Supreme Court has since rejected the request to nullify the election result.
